Nerve Root Block Injections
If you’re experiencing sharp, radiating pain from your neck or lower back into your arms or legs, you may be dealing with a pinched or inflamed nerve root. This type of pain can be debilitating, affecting your ability to walk, sit, sleep, or carry out daily activities. One highly effective diagnostic and therapeutic option is a nerve root block injection.

What Is a Nerve Root Block Injection?
A nerve root block is a specialised injection targeting the area where spinal nerves exit the spinal column (the nerve root). The injection usually contains a combination of a local anaesthetic and a steroid to reduce inflammation and pain around the nerve.
Nerve root blocks serve two primary purposes:
- Diagnosis: To determine the source of nerve-related pain.
- Treatment: To provide long-term pain relief by reducing inflammation.
Common Conditions Treated with Nerve Root Blocks
This procedure may be recommended if you’re suffering from:
- Herniated or bulging discs
- Spinal stenosis
- Sciatica
- Degenerative disc disease
- Nerve impingement from arthritis or bony overgrowth
What to Expect During the Procedure
Nerve root block injections are typically performed under X-ray guidance (fluoroscopy) to ensure precision. Here’s a step-by-step overview:
- Preparation
You’ll be asked to lie on an examination table, and the area to be treated is cleaned and numbed with plenty of local anaesthetic. - Needle Insertion
Using imaging guidance, the consultant inserts a fine needle near the affected nerve root. - Injection
A mixture of steroid and anaesthetic is injected directly around the nerve and into the spinal canal (epidural space) near the disc. You may feel pressure, but the procedure is generally well tolerated and shouldn’t normally be painful. - Post-Procedure Monitoring
You’ll be observed for a short time afterwards and can usually go home the same day. Driving yourself home should be avoided.
After the Injection: Recovery and Results
- Pain Relief Timeline: Relief may begin within a few hours (from the anaesthetic), while the steroid may take several days or even a few weeks to have its full effect.
- Activity: Most patients can resume normal activities the following day.
- Effectiveness: Some patients experience weeks to months of relief. In some cases (70% of patients with sciatica) permanent relief is obtained. In others, repeat injections may be recommended or escalation to surgical intervention.
Are Nerve Root Blocks Safe?
Nerve root blocks are generally considered very safe when performed by an experienced spinal specialist. Potential risks are minimal but may include:
- Temporary numbness or weakness
- Mild pain at the injection site
- Very rare complications like bleeding , infection, or nerve dysfunction (neuropathic pain)

Is a Nerve Root Block Right for You?
Nerve root blocks are not a cure, but they can significantly reduce pain and inflammation, helping you regain mobility and quality of life. They are often used in conjunction with physiotherapy and other non-surgical treatments. For patients who may require surgery, nerve root blocks can also help confirm the exact source of pain.
